Julius Lester on the Oppression of Whites

Revolutionary Notes

Julius Lester

Julius Lester

Julius Lester’s unusual résumé includes stints as a recording artist, television and radio broadcaster, civil “rights” activist, Afro-American Studies professor, novelist, and author of children’s stories. He also married a Jewess and converted to Judaism after discovering that his great-grandfather, Adolph Altschul, was a Jew who had married a freed slave woman. Among Lester’s non-fiction books of adult interest are Look Out, Whitey! Black Power’s Gon’ Get Your Mama! (1968), Revolutionary Notes (1969), All Is Well (1976), and Lovesong: Becoming a Jew (1988).

Look Out WhiteyWhat follows is excerpted from Revolutionary Notes, of which Lester says on his website: “This book consists of political opinion pieces written between 1967-1970 for various politically radical publications. As a ‘period piece’ it was interesting for me to look through the essays […] However, the language and many of the ideas represent a person I ceased to be around 1970 or so.” Whatever Lester’s reservations about the political material he produced during this period, his brief meditation on “The Oppression of Whites” makes for interesting reading today, not only for its historical value, but for those observations he makes that ring so surprisingly true today. Lester’s vision of revolution is not likely to have borne very much resemblance to what those who frequent sites like Aryan Skynet would like to see implemented; but these readers more than any others, perhaps, will find Lester’s words worthwhile.

The potential for revolution in this country will remain unrealized until whites understand that they are an oppressed people. Oppression is generally thought of as a condition endured only by blacks, Puerto Ricans, Mexican-Americans, and the poor whites of the South. Oppression is associated with the poverty of Appalachia and the tenements of Harlem, but a rundown mountain shack and a rat-infested tenement are only an aspect of oppression — material deprivation.

CulkinOppression is a condition common to all of us who are without the power to make the decisions that govern the political, economic, and social life of this country. We are oppressed because our lives are predetermined by an economic machine […] eventually to die, having lived our lives “earning a living.” We are oppressed because to “earn a living” (work), we are told, is good; to refuse to “earn a living,” voluntarily or involuntarily, is bad. Two weeks of every fifty-two are allotted to us to live. The other fifty are spent being “good,” i.e., keeping the economic machine functioning. Our reward for being “good” is a salary, a pacifier with which we feed, clothe, and house ourselves and our families and dull the pain by going into debt to buy the luxury items which give us the illusion of life.

It is necessary for the white radical to analyze the nature of his oppression and realize that any person who earns wages is a member of the working class. The taxi driver and the college professor are equal members of the working class. The professor’s salary and social status give him certain attitudes whereby he can believe himself to be different. He is middle-class, bourgeois, but he is still a part of the working class. The middle class and the working class are not opposed to each other. The middle class must be defined anew.

Whites are oppressed, but their realization of this is as yet, for the most part, unconscious. The hippie phenomenon, the widespread use of drugs, the teen-age runaways and the anti-war movement are all reactions to oppression. But the nature and substance of that oppression is only faintly articulated. Until a people understand what is being done to them, they will react only […] They will not fight back against it.

LohanPerhaps the basic inability of black radicals and whites to communicate lies in the fact that the former know acutely the nature of oppression, while whites still think they’re free. They still find it difficult not to believe the fairy tales about this country taught in school. Blacks know what has been done to them and they are angry. Whites do not and thus can only romantically identify with the anger of blacks.

Yet we are all victims of the ideology of inhumanity on which this country thrives. It is an ideology which says that if the amount of money in a man’s pocket does not correspond to some numbers on a tag, that man can starve, be kicked out of his home, and go naked. It is an ideology of death, whose most blatant manifestation is napalm. But napalm is the logical extension of an ideology which requires money in exchange for the basic necessities of life.

CyrusThere is much talk and confusion as to how to organize whites. Few feel adequate to the task and rationalize by saying that it is easier to organize in the black community. Yet, all around us there are whites who are trying to get out of the system the best way they can. For most it is no more than sitting in front of the television set with a can of beer night after night and being anesthetized. Whites use a myriad of drugs to dull the pain. They do not want their perception of reality heightened. It is heightened too much already, and if they can’t dull the pain, they eventually go quietly berserk one day. How many times a week do we read of some quiet model citizen eliminating his wife, kids, and himself and leaving no explanation behind for the neighbors? The neighbors don’t need it explained, however. They know.

The inhumanity of America is etched into the lines of every white face. Yet the white radical tends to look upon whites with contempt. But talk to a cab driver, a waitress, one of those chic young secretaries, an airline stewardess, and the pain and misery they live is immediately apparent. Just as the absence of physical comfort reflects the oppression of the Kentucky miner, the absence of any semblance of a whole man reflects the oppression of those who have physical comfort.

The phrase that is being used to characterize the anti-war movement now is “from protest to resistance.” That’s true on one level, but the real battle has not yet been joined. That is the struggle against oppression. All that is evident now are the reactions to oppression. It is the responsibility of the white radical to move from reaction to oppression to action against it.

While I am sympathetic to the plight of the white working class, and am hardly a wealthy man, I’m not at all a “revolutionary” and think that class solidarity with blacks or browns is a losing proposition for the white working class.

    Nationalism is the answer.

The “1%,” as the Occupy Wall Street types like to label them, are fanatically anti-white, pro-multiculturalism and anti-nationalist.

I’ve always said that imperialism is perhaps the main issue. The whites in the “1%” imagine themselves as global hegemons and do, in fact, have “class solidarity” with their fellow hegemons who are non-white.

The “NRx” type people are simply the white (and Jewish) wanna-be hegemons currently out of power.

I wish black nationalists the best of luck but they don’t really have much to offer us, except for separation. In that, I’m all for guys like Louis Farrakhan and Pastor David Manning.

Blacks are sort of the tragic figures of human evolution. Not my fault, not my concern. I’m blissfully free of any romantic notions of the Noble Savage or the White Man’s Burden.

In a sense, I’m not even all that concerned with The Jews – it’s their White collaborators that are the real problem.

As I indicate, I don’t think Lester’s notion of revolution has much in common with ours, and when I say “revolution” I’m not talking about “The Day of the Rope” or bandolero types tossing bombs into cafes. If whites achieve racial consciousness, however, and do eventually achieve some form of political sovereignty, this shift will remembered as a revolution. Again, while I don’t exactly buy into Lester’s class warfare paradigm, there is quite a bit of truth peppered throughout what he has to say, which is why I decided to post it here.

Even a peaceful revolution implies some overturning of the social order all at once. I’m more of an evolutionist.

Some WN types truly believe in a “white man on a horse,” some new Hitler that will overturn the social order based on the sheer force of his personality. I think they miss the fact that Hitler was simply a product of his time, just like FDR, Stalin, Lenin, Mao, and Mussolini. They were products of the newly emerging mass media. The National Socialists actually used phonographs and loudspeakers to broadcast to larger crowds than would otherwise been possible. FDR famously used the radio. Cinema was a huge influence. It was easy to develop these cults-of-personality due to the new broadcasting media.

The internet is of course pushing this in the opposite direction, from broadcasting to narrow-casting.

Post World War II saw the rise of anti-whiteness which sparked the Civil Rights era and has now peaked under Obama. I do think Whites are more universalist than other races, but we still have the basic racial consciousness, it’s simply been suppressed officially, which is why it comes out in all sorts of indirect ways (implicit whiteness.)

To kids growing up these days, MLK and Selma, Alabama are just more boring crap you learn in high school history, and if they happen to live around the Diversities, they will learn “race realism” due to what they can see with their own eyes. In fact, as Whites become a smaller percentage of the population, I’m guessing people will continue to organize along racial lines as they always have throughout history.

I think guys like Julius Lester mean well, in a sense, but it’s all just so much Marxism; uniting the lower classes, regardless of race, against the 1%. It could work as a confederation of independent nations perhaps, but forcing everyone into a multi-racial proletariat (“multitude” is the new term-du-jour among leftists) is exactly what “they” want.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_%28Negri_and_Hardt_book%29

As for “alienation” of labor, this is all basically right, in my opinion. Since the dawn of agriculture, if you weren’t a landowner, you were one or another kind of peasant/slave. The industrial revolution, when growing food became something a specialized minority does, has indeed, as Marx would say, alienated people from the product of their labor.

But I’m still a techno-optimist. The era of robot manufacturing is here. If we simply stopped subsidizing third world population booms, kept humanity from overpopulation, and made some common sense arrangements to use our natural resources more efficiently, at least White people could live very, very well. The Japanese are doing it right.

One issue we need to deal with is fixing our economic systems so we don’t rely on constant population and economic growth. (Getting rid of usury will help.) We should plan for a smaller population in the future, and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

I’m suspicious of those NRx types that are always blaming things on “egalitarianism.” I figure a rough egalitarianism is probably workable, at least among our own people.

“The hippie phenomenon, the widespread use of drugs, the teen-age runaways and the anti-war movement are all reactions to oppression”.
Actually those were all phenomenon created by that rootless international clique’s entertainment media to unravel the fabric of our civilization.
Also, why am I not surprised that a black thinks ‘working’ is a symptom of oppression? Most White people enjoy work and get a sense of profound satisfaction from a job well done.
Blacks are oppressed only by nature, human beings have done everything possible to give those creatures undeserved advantages, but their own shortcomings always get them in the end.
I admit it is very unusual and interesting to see a black try to sympathize not only with someone else, but someone of a different race, but, as usual, they just don’t get it.
I’m sure he thinks we are all oppressed by big fat White Texas oil millionaires or something. Oh well, so he converted to Judaism? Good for him, he can immigrate to israel. After all, they’ll let him in, right?

I don’t agree with everything he says here, but I thought his perspective was interesting. It’s true that those things you mention – the counterculture ethos, drugs, etc. – were encouraged by that “rootless international clique” you describe; but none of the rot would have set in or had any initial appeal if, as Lester indicates, these whites were not lacking something and were not spiritually whole individuals and communities. You include the anti-war movement as one of the things “created” by Jews, but I don’t think Jews need to be involved for someone to want to oppose Vietnam or any other imperial intervention. Lester is correct to lay at least some of the blame on the doorstep of the nihilistic money-grubbing mentality for the culture of war that degrades these whites – and, yes, Jews have promoted that. I’m sure a ton of Jews profiteered from Vietnam war contracts, and we know that Jews were prominent in the counterculture, as well. Jews are key players in the corruption of the white soul, but the fact that Lester doesn’t name them here doesn’t invalidate everything he has to say. I read somewhere that he was actually accused of anti-Semitism at one point.

Well, it doesn’t take much to get called antisemitic.
Also I recall some people saying that we didn’t even fight the Viet Nam or Korean war to win, that it was like the higher ups in government kept sabotaging all efforts to score any meaningful victories. G.L. Rockwell wrote about that, so, of course the Eskimos were also making a sh*t ton of money off the war, and, as usual, working the other side with the anti-war/hippie movement to widen the generation gap so the young would no longer learn from the experience of their elders.
The only thing I agree with was that our complacency when times were good has been our undoing. It just never occurred to anybody that it could end or a time would come when the roles would be reversed and we would find that our wandering nomad friends were really our enemies and that someday the black man would have the whip hand over us.
We just can’t seem to learn that a little paranoia is healthy and essential to self preservation.
I am always amazed at how much my personal life story coincides with everything happening to the White race in general.
Anyway, I just got up and found that my other blog has also been taken down so I’m a little frazzled.
Eh, I’m shelling out the money to pay for an actual website. I think I can get away with more if I pay those jerks. That’s what Incogman had to do.

Each of us expresses the history of our people in emblematic microcosmic fragments, whether we’re a politician taking money from the Israel lobby or just some nerd obsessing over Pokemon on the internet. The race lives and finds a part of its destiny in everybody.

The “hippie” thing was created to derail the anti-Vietnam war movement.

Before “hippies” started appearing with LSD, about 1966, the anti-Vietnam war movement were a bunch of well dressed, suit and tie wearing college students protesting with their professors, waving professional-looking signs and assembling peacefully. They were often organized by perfectly respectable Quaker groups.

Even at the time, many anti-war types and the left were quite suspicious about the emergence of hippies – left wing agitator ((Abbie Hoffman) said as much back then.

(Amusingly, Abbie Hoffman was set up by some “hip” Whites, dosed with LSD, had the word “FUCK” written on his forehead, and posed with an Uzi while sticking his tongue out, Gene Simmons-style, for the cameras. It destroyed whatever little credibility he had as a “activist organizer” which was, of course, the purpose. It took him years to realize he had been bamboozled.)

But now we know, the records have been released. LSD and the hippies were, in fact, a CIA plot to distract and demoralize the anti-war movement and to alienate the baby boomers from their parents.

Sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll proved quite a powerful draw. The “hippie” movement kept the Vietnam war going for nearly another decade after the protests had first started, which was exactly the point.

I’ve written about this quite a bit in the last two years.

If it was created, it wasn’t created from nothing. There was a lot of carry-over from beatnik and jazz culture in the 40s and 50s. It was definitely encouraged for a broader audience in the 60s, though.

I think it was the summer of 1966 specifically when the “hippie” thing was introduced – on one specific TV show on one of the only three networks, with a specific band (the Byrds.) Sure, they riffed off of some trends that had existed earlier, but the “hippies” were not an organic development that just “happened” to become popular. It was a well publicized campaign organized by specific people in the industry. The style of dress came from a specific fashion designer, the style of dance came from a specific group (Vito and the Freaks) and it was centered around a specific club, the Whiskey-a-Go-Go, an area that was not, previously, a center of the music scene.

The Beatles didn’t start out as hippies but instead were recruited into it and later followed the trend.

We now have a documentary record, going all the way back to the 1950s, of just such a “movement” – including the drugs, the sex, the music, the fashion, etc. – being planned by the top levels of the “establishment.”

Then, over the course of one summer, we had just such a “youth movement” being publicized on national TV. This at a time when you had just the three TV channels, and no more than a handful of influential publications that could have pulled it off.

It was far more coordinated and manufactured than people realize.

Sure, and the “free body culture” of Germany in the late 1800s had a sort of revival in California among surfers and other bohemian types in the 1950s. You can sort of see those as “proto-hippies” – but the actual “hippie movement” that was broadcast on the three TV networks, and popularized by a series of musical festivals complete with mass LSD dosing was not an “organic” movement.

Again, we have the documents now. These were guys who read “Brave New World” and tried to put it into practice.

I mean, Timothy Leary himself said “everything” he did was on the instructions of the CIA.

Also, too, LSD had been the CIA’s favorite drug since the 1950s, and just when it was made illegal, “the 60s” happened and the drug was given away … FOR FREE (how many drug dealers give out drugs for FREE, anyway?) at all those music festivals.

Again, the “hippie movement” was far more manufactured than people realize.

Didn’t the Vietnam anti-war movement end at about the same time the draft ended? I think Whittaker mentioned that once. Apparently people didn’t really care about the war, they just didnt want to be drafted into fighting it.

Well, anyone can see how television shows, movies and the popular music of the time encouraged all that self destructive behavior. The social engineering is quite obvious looking back. Some people say those wars were not about stopping communism so much as thinning down the White population.
Anyway, I’ve no doubt our friends had at least infiltrated all the alphabet agencies by that time. Hell, even back in the 30’s the government was riddled with them.
