Candyman: Bernard Rose’s Failed Anti-Racist Statement of Unintentional Race-Realist Horror

Bernard Rose’s worthwhile horror movie Candyman (1992), adapted from a short story by Clive Barker, is an intriguing case of a film that set out to be one thing, but comes across in the finished product as having had entirely different intentions. The filmmakers had egalitarian motives, hoping to promote miscegenation and guilt over America’s structural inequality and lynch-mobbing legacy of hate; but Candyman is just as entertaining and resonant for race-realists as it is for dupes, inadvertently conveying hideous notions about congoids as well as about the white women who pursue them.

The de rigueur horror movie prologue establishes both the mythos of the titular bogey and the sex appeal of the bad boy type, which will be more fully developed once the audience meets protagonist Helen (Virginia Madsen), a sheltered academic doing research into urban legends. Helen is one of those white women whose self-loathing notions of progress involve half-hearted shows of solidarity with those less fortunate than herself, particularly when they are non-white – all while maintaining her own distant, privileged standard of living, her friendship with token college mulatto Bernie (Kasi Lemmons) being her sole concession to her own expectation that she ought to associate with them and view them as her equals.

This changes, however, as Helen continues to delve further into the mystery of the Candyman (Night of the Living Dead’s Tony Todd), a legendary murderer reputed to haunt a Chicago housing project called Cabrini Green. After learning a few further details about the phantom of the ghetto from a cleaning lady – her only contact with the world of real blacks – Helen is sufficiently aroused that she decides to do a little on-the-scene investigation and first-hand anthropological research in the ominous, gang-dominated tenement of horrors. The idea of a supernatural African serial killer excites her, and to the extent that Candyman reinforces the Hebrew myth of the beautiful blonde sophisticate’s secret wish to be ravaged by thuggish blacks, the film respects the politically correct orthodoxies.

The Helen character is a latent mudshark, clearly attracted to the hypnotic and Dracula-like mojo of the Candyman. The cast-and-crew commentary track provides some insights into the thought processes lurking behind the lurid premise. “His attack is, um, openly sexual, you know,” says writer-director Bernard Rose. “He has basically this sort of huge cock on his hand and, um, he kills people by sticking it in them, in their orifices. That’s part of the appeal of the movie, I think that’s partly why people like it.” Rose may even reveal a hint of his own arousal by the character with his inclusion of a scene in which a Jewish-looking psychiatrist (Stanley DeSantis) whimpers as he is abruptly punctured and replumbed from behind by the phantom’s big, black hook.

Rose also puts the movie into a gothic historical context:

People are frightened of “the wrong part of town” […] That fear is very real. And the fact that it’s really, in reality, unfounded, uh, makes it more interesting, not less, because an irrational fear, in a sense, is the very fundamental building block of racism. And I think that the film, in a sense, then, […] became a kind of rather subtle way of actually, um, exploring what is really the dark heart of American history, which is a country built on slavery.

A few minutes later, however, Rose goes on to contradict his own assertion that fear of “the wrong part of town” is, “in reality, unfounded,” when he fumbles through a discussion of the film’s location shooting in one of Chicago’s most crime-infested neighborhoods:

Cabrini Green was – it’s a real housing project, south of downtown Chicago, just by the Gold Coast, where there had been, uh, you know – the place had become – really suffered from the most extreme kind of urban blight, and you had large numbers of people housed in there who were living in, um, uh, pretty appalling conditions. […] There were, like, you know, uh, gangs in the neighborhood that would essentially make it unpoliceable. It was a dangerous place. It was a place where people would get shot for no good reason.

The movie itself gives the lie to Rose’s “unfounded” remark when Helen, idiotically throwing caution to the wind, ventures into the netherworld by herself to explore the site of a gruesome Candyman attack that happens to have occurred in a public men’s restroom. Here Helen reveals herself to be not merely a mudshark, but a full-blown scato-pathological shitshark, simultaneously repulsed and allured by the feces-smeared walls of this shrine of inner-city Chicago vibrancy. Although almost overpowered by the stench of the place, she feels compelled to peek into each of the stalls, but is suddenly accosted – no doubt to her great excitement – by a gang of blacks who object to her being there. One of them, impersonating the Candyman, whacks a hook across her face, knocking her out and nearly blinding her.

A Candyman impersonator is less than impressed with Helen’s lame transracial/transgender excuses for prowling around a men’s restroom in a black neighborhood.

Fortunately, mixed-race actress Kasi Lemmons chimes in during the commentary track with a rationalization that twists all of this into a commentary on societal (i.e., white) racism:

The Candyman is born of extreme racism against him, and so he takes, kind of, that hatred and […] it’s become a part of his monstrousness. And so, I guess, that’s saying that we [i.e., members of the audience] are breeding monsters, you know, we are making monsters by our [i.e., white America’s] past hatred, um, and we’re [i.e., whites are] responsible. You know, we’re responsible for the Candyman. We’re responsible for the monsters that we create.

Helen, a liberal shitshark who feels conflicted at encountering such an obvious display of African savagery, can console herself, based on the above societal monster-creation thesis, that she and not her attackers is to blame for what has occurred because she is the one who created them. Helen is given the chance to live out the fantasy of herself-as-monster when she finds herself suspected of a series of bloody murders. On the surface, this is the story of a woman who finds herself wrongly accused – and this is the position that actress Virginia Madsen takes, as she confides during the commentary – but, on another level, Candyman can be read as the subjective account of an insane person who blacks out – no pun intended – and goes berserk, with no memory of her reprehensible actions. According to the latter interpretation, the Candyman is a figment of the protagonist’s imagination, and all of the acts committed by him onscreen are in actuality Helen’s doing.

There is, furthermore, a motivation for Helen if one chooses to pin these atrocities on her. She has earlier admired a black woman’s baby – a baby later abducted, putatively by the Candyman. The subtext here is that Helen is such a depraved shitshark that she would not only fuck, but would actually kill to acquire a congoid of her own – and does. Racist viewers – and, one has to imagine, blacks as well – can at least console themselves with the indignities Candyman sadistically visits on Helen throughout her story. The climactic sequence, for instance, finds her crawling around on the ground like a worm to escape a bonfire that scorches her hair off. There is truly a ring of poetic justice in the sickening vision of an Aryan woman deprived of her beautiful blonde head of hair as a punishment for her race-treachery. Candyman’s kiss, furthermore, when Helen is pleased to finally receive it, is a torture as bees pour out of his mouth to sting in retribution for racism past; it is the kiss of death.

And notwithstanding the movie’s stated anti-racist intentions, its grotesque depiction of a representative shitshark as a knife-wielding, infant-pilfering, stall-peeping, and amnesia-prone madwoman can hardly have been the public image Coudenhove-Kalergi had in mind for the recruitment of the mothers of his future race of mongrel Jew-worshippers. Those really murdered by the miscegenators, of course, are their own unborn posterity of European racial integrity – but luckily not much of the typical mudshark’s squandered genetic material is in same league as that on display in the person of Candyman inamorata Virginia Madsen.

    I watched this movie in my early teens, it was scarier than Freddy or Jason because it showed the real living Hell that is a Black Ghetto and Tony Todd is the type of Black guy that you don’t want encounter in a dark alley.

    Maybe this movie was made with a anti-Racist agenda but the message that I got was to stay hell away from Blacks.

      I liked horror alright but never really wanted to see this one as a kid because I perceived it as a “black movie” – and it sort of is – but there’s a lot in it that whites can appreciate. You’re right that it’s scarier, I think, for being grounded in a recognizable racial reality.

    Mudsharkery in white lands is a symptom of white genocide. Mass non-white immigration + forced assimilation + relentless anti-white propaganda in all white countries is inevitably going to produce it.

    The problem is not individuals making a particular choice. The problem is the environment that is being FORCED on to all white areas.

    I am unconcerned with a white girl moving to any dusky land that will have her and mudsharking all she wants as long as she and her spawn stay there.

      I’m reluctant to accept a totally environmental explanation for such racial decrepitude. Individual choice and free will, though perhaps illusory on some level, is still important in my view. Take a look at the woman in the video I posted underneath the article. At some point she apparently gave up on finding a good man and went to bed with a negro. That was a choice. A poor family background and bad education might have predisposed her to such behavior, but she had options to weigh at the moment of surrender. I don’t believe that anybody or anything “forced” her to accept blacks as sexual partners – unless, of course, she was raped, which given the fact that she gave birth to multiple mulattoes, doesn’t seem likely. I don’t like explanations that make us helpless victims of circumstances. If that’s the case, none of us have any motivation to strive to improve our chances. I always work from the standpoint that individual interactions matter and can change minds. I’m not saying that what you’ve written is wrong, and obviously mudsharkery wouldn’t be going on today if the races hadn’t been forcibly integrated; but I resist the idea that we have to accept it as a reality of everyday life in situations where we’re unable to geographically resegregate.

THAT’S what’s changed.The integration is now forced. Before 1957, it wasn’t. The conditions of interbreeding are now forced. They weren’t before. The conditions can be changed more easily than human nature. You can’t breed with someone who isn’t there.

        Miscegenation is the most natural thing in the world. Our European ancestors seemed to have actually mated with Neanderthals.

        White men quite often look with disgust at mudsharks. But you should hear what white women say about White men with “Dragon Lady” Asian wives.

        A black man can have all the necessary masculine characteristics to sexually arouse a white woman. Some southern partisans like to deny it, but Southern White men spent generations helping themselves to the prettiest Black slave girls.

        This is why sexual arguments are losers for a pro-white movement. Once you start making sexual rules, you have to keep going – and it will always inevitably lead to something that a hardcore Catholic lady would feel comfortable with. And it’s always going to end with crazy nuts like that guy who tried to discredit the NPI conference demanding stoning people for sexual crimes.

        OK, no miscegenation, virgin marriages, no divorce, adultery gets the death penalty, ban pornography, boys jerking off get punished. Of course, homosexuality is out, so your gay boys decide to join the priesthood and be “celibate” – and look how that turns out.

        White people tend to be the least ethnocentric people on the planet. My speculation is that it’s something to do with recessive traits.

        Anytime you have a multi-racial society you are going to have miscegenation. Anytime you have Race A in the dominant position over Race B, you are going to have men of Race A poaching the women of Race B – a development that will be welcomed by many women of Race B precisely because of that power differential. You will also have women of Race A “mating down” with the men of Race B also precisely because of the power differential.

        When you have whites and blacks living together there will always be miscegenation – that is precisely why the South had so many strict rules about miscegenation – and why those rules were really only enforced on White women/Black men pairings and completely and hypocritically overlooked with White men/Black women pairings.

        The solution isn’t to demonize miscegenators – we don’t have control of the culture thus don’t have the power to do that anyway. The solution is White Nationalism, a nation of our own, by and for White people.

        How does that explain highly intelligent, upper class White women who mudshark?

        I suspect there are regional difference in experiences too. Someone living in the Midwest might only see a mass of ghetto blacks. I’ve worked with a handful of the cream-de-la-cream of Black people – white presenting, intelligent, attractive.

        Sexual attraction isn’t rational, it’s not something cerebral. Women – and men – make “stupid decisions” regarding sex all the time. There is also the appeal of “forbidden fruit” which is a common human urge.

        It’s just like other kinds of sexual morality – on an individual and family level, church is the proper place for enforcing sexual morality. You can shame your daughters and you can make the women in your family aware of the consequences, but White men bitching about mudsharks just comes across as sour grapes.

        Ask white women how much luck they have shaming a successful White man for yellow fever – hell, Yellow Fever is acceptable at AmRen.

        I’m not interesting in making judgements about other people’s sex lives. What I am interested in doing is defanging the word “racist” – which is just a racial slur for white people – and making it legitimate for white people to act in their own interests.

        If some white women somewhere wants to have little mulatto children, it has nothing to do with me. There have always been, and there will always be, Whites that “go native.” They separate themselves from the White tribe and they join the other tribe.

        Demonizing other races is exactly what they want us to do, because it’s a losing strategy. We win when we have the moral high ground. I’m not pro-White because Black people are bad. It wouldn’t make any difference to me if Asians were proven to be “superior” to White people in every way. It makes no difference to me that Ashkenazi Jews have higher IQs than a lot of White people.

        I’m pro-White because I’m White and my family is White. I’m pro-White because White people are “my people.” It has nothing to do with how “superior” or “inferior” other races are.

        Only we can be us.

        Also, even though it mostly tends to be fat and unappealing white women one sees with blacks, the demographic crisis in which whites find themselves makes this more than a matter of mere aesthetics.

Nobody is talking about implementing an anti-masturbation police state, but some system of standards is necessary. Look at the success of the SJWs in enforcing their cultural Marxist reign of terror. Cultures can be changed with time, political will, and talent.

Like or dislike a given system – Christian traditionalism or Islam, for instance – and all of it, true, is arbitrary; but basic rules and standards about sexual conduct – not whoring around or having sex with animals, etc. – are a feature of any civilization that’s lifted itself out of the evolutionary sludge and established societies of any worth and lasting order.

        The explanation is massive 20th-century propaganda. While there are exceptions, white females are far more susceptible to propaganda than white males. This fact has been known to the elite since at least the time of Bernays

        Thus, if the propaganda tells white females to reject the traditional white family in lieu of a (truly tedious and pointless) career, and to breed with an ape as the cherry on top, that’s what many of them will do.

        Yet, still, White women are the most “racist” when it comes to miscegenation. Fewer white women “breed out” than any other race. So the propaganda hasn’t been particularly effective.

        I would say the whole “career before family” idea has been far more effective at lowering the white birth rate.

    After all, danger and violence are integral parts of masculinity.

    50 Shades was a best seller for a reason.

    A woman that used to write spanking porn with me eventually turned to writing horror. Ann Rice wrote not only vampire novels, but S&M erotica.

    Men are usually clueless when it comes to women’s sexuality.

    I have no doubt that the director of this movie is anti-White, but as you say, sometimes your intentions don’t always pan out and sometimes you wind up making the opposite points you intend to.

      Well, I have a soft spot for the 80s and early 90s, particularly in this genre, and this one is actually pretty well made and like Enemy Territory it paints a comparatively honest portrait of ghetto life. Plus the bimbo gets her hair burnt off and a mouthful of bees at the end!

    As a fan of horror movies (more particularly slasher films) as a kid, I never cared for Candyman much. The only thing I remember of note is that the black kids in my school all seemed to like it. No surprise since they’re taught since birth to have a sense of racial consciousness and solidarity.

    I’m not too concerned about people on our side attempting to shame mudsharks. I have a daughter and if mudsharkery somehow became very uncool through popular pressure or it came to be seen as edgy and hip to buck the system’s constant miscegenation propaganda, then so much the better for my family and the race. We have to develop a pro-White counterculture that touches on everything from politics to fashion to art. All these things will develop along the way towards a future ethno-state. I don’t see how something as fundamental as mate selection norms will sort themselves out only after we have a state. If there is a potential that this harping may reduce converts to pro-Whiteness, by its crudity or perceived aroma of loserdom, that’s just a reflection of the current zeitgeist which is the crux of the matter anyways. Eventually things will change in our direction and what formerly may have been dismissed by many will become akin to the diversity and environmental propaganda that infects everything now and has a significant influence.

    Certainly people can be attracted to any race, but the normalization of miscegenation is something that can be combated in a variety of ways.

    There are 2 sequels to this film – Candyman Farewell to the Flesh and Candyman Day of the Dead. Have you seen them and do they convey the same type of message?

      I knew about Farewell to the Flesh but hadn’t heard of Day of the Dead. I haven’t seen either film, but would like to. Alas, I decided this month to drop my Netflix subscription, so as not to contribute in any way to the filling of cultural Marxist enemy coffers. Any movies I review from now on will either be from my own collection or available from my public library. I recommend that everybody should avoid paying for movies whenever possible. Why help in any way to subsidize the parasitic propagandizing of our people?
